Peter Attia's Chart of Medicine 2.0 vs. 3.0

It's important to know what we can and can't control in medicine.

We can't run from our genes.

We can't avoid death.

As of writing this newsletter, these are inevitables.

These are known uncontrollables.

In Peter Attia's chart above, both curves eventually hit y=0, regardless of their peaks.

However, the "No intervention" curve vs. the Medicine 3.0 curve is significantly different, indicating we do have a say.

  1. We can alter how our genes are expressed.

  2. We can alter the rate at which we decline.

In today's newsletter, I want to encourage you that your decisions matter. You have an influence (a massive one) on the trajectory of your healthspan and lifespan.

You¹ vs. You²

Let's consider a hypothetical thought experiment:

We have You¹ vs. You².

You¹ disregards all health recommendations.

You¹ smokes, is overweight, has type 2 diabetes, refuses to exercise, and doesn't prioritize sleep.

These are ingredients for a path going nowhere fast.

Now, You².

You² is laser-focused on lifestyle optimization.

You² doesn't smoke or drink alcohol, has metabolic lab values that are optimal, a consistent exercise program, follows a well-rounded nutrition program, and prioritizes sleep.

Will You² outlive You¹?

Based on data, we are talking about a 10-14-year life expectancy difference.

Potentially an additional decade.

Lifestyle matters for lifespan.

Lifespan simply refers to the total number of years lived.

What isn't accounted for is the quality of life lived - healthspan.

The ability to do the things in life you want to do.

You¹ has a much lower probability of sustaining the mobility and functionality required for simple daily activities with age.

You² has a much higher probability of being able to go surfing, yoga, hiking, etc, at 80 years old.

You² has stacked the deck in their favor to be able to live life while still enjoying the activities that bring the most joy to them.

Lifestyle matters for healthspan.

Stacking the Deck in Your Favor

In reality, life is a game of fluctuating between You¹ vs. You².

It's unrealistic to assume you can be You² all the time.

However, knowing the core pillars that have the potential to add years and quality to your life is crucial.

The big You² pillars:

  • Consistent Exercise Program

  • Metabolic Balance

  • Minimize Visceral Fat & Maximize Lean Muscle

  • Blood Pressure Management

  • Proper Sleep Hygiene

  • Relationships & Community

  • Whole Foods-Based Nutrition Plan

These are the main factors that directly influence the steepness of the decline curve.

You have influence over all of these pillars, whether it's simply showing up and being consistent or being a proactive patient.

These are the controllables that tip the scales of life in your favor.

Setting these as your You² north star offers tangible targets that we, including myself, can all strive for.

Lifestyle affects your lifespan and healthspan.

Change your lifestyle to change your life.
