My Ask to You
About two years ago, my son thought it would be an interesting experiment for me to put on a CGM (continuous glucose monitor).
Many people assume CGMs are only for Type-1 diabetics (those who can't naturally produce insulin).
With Type-2 diabetes (those who have become insulin resistant) on a meteoric rise in the US, CGMs have become even more popular.1
I reluctantly agreed to the experiment, confident it would be a waste of time.
Proudly telling my son, "If you want me to show you how well I eat, I'll prove it to you."
24 hours after putting on the CGM, red flags appeared.
When I ate a meal, the CGM recorded a spike in blood sugar (which is natural after eating); however, my glucose was taking an unnecessary amount of time to come down.
Meaning: I would eat, glucose would flood my bloodstream, and insulin would be released. The problem was that my body wasn't responding to insulin properly, so the glucose stayed elevated.
Alarmingly suggesting: I may be insulin resistant.
The next day, I got my Hemoglobin A1c checked (a 90-day indicator of how well my blood sugar is managed).
I was pre-diabetic.
No symptoms. No warning signs. I felt great.
Silently, my metabolic health was declining.
It was time for a change.
The Risks of Chronically High Blood Sugar
High blood pressure is referred to as the 'Silent Killer'.
Hyperglycemia (chronically high blood sugar) can also silently damage your body over time without you noticing any signs or symptoms.
The truth is, chronically high blood sugars are dangerous to every major system in the body.
High blood sugar levels damage the small and large vessels.2
How?
Through a process called glycation. Excess glucose binds to proteins and fats, forming “advanced glycation end-products” (AGEs).
AGEs increase oxidative stress and inflammation and suppress nitric oxide production, which prevents proper blood vessel dilation.
This can stiffen blood vessels and eventually impair circulation.
Because oxygen and blood flow are the primary fuel supply, this can impact the entire body.
Tactics to Lower Your Blood Sugar
Now that we have established the dangers of chronically high blood sugar levels, let's dive into the ways I naturally lowered my levels.
Walk After You Eat
Going for a 10-20 minute digest walk after a meal works because your muscles take the glucose from your bloodstream and use it as fuel.3
Prioritize Protein + Fiber First
The order in which you eat food affects your blood sugar levels. Starting with protein, then high fiber, then carbs can blunt glucose levels.4
Break Up Long Sitting Periods
Many of us spend most of the day sitting at a desk or at our computers. Set an hour timer to complete 10-20 air squats, or walk around the office or the block. Take the stairs. These small bursts of exercise can lower your glucose levels.
Limit Sugary Drinks & Snacks
Sodas, sweet teas, sugar lattes, and even certain juices can raise your glucose levels. Cutting down or substituting these for water can make a big difference.5
Build Muscle
Adding strength training to your weekly routine can significantly improve your glucose levels, as muscle can dramatically enhance insulin sensitivity.
My Ask to You
More than 80% of people with prediabetes are unaware they have it.
I fell into that statistic.
Even though you may have no symptoms, warning signs, or problems today, you could still have elevated blood sugar levels.
The only way to be certain is by knowing your numbers.
Understanding where your fasting glucose, insulin, and hemoglobin A1c levels are will help paint a picture of your metabolic health.
Don't wait until problems surface.
Find out where you stand today.
Be proactive, not reactive.
If You Don't Test, You Don't Know
True health ownership starts with knowledge.
Understanding which biomarkers are in range or, more importantly, out of range will help you personalize and create your own instruction manual.
Function Health is an all-in-one health platform that starts with 100+ lab tests, including your heart, hormones, liver, kidneys, thyroid, autoimmunity, cancer signals, toxins, and overall nutrients.
Function provides five times more bloodwork testing than standard primary care labs, which would cost you thousands of dollars out of pocket.
Function makes scheduling at 2,000 locations across the USA convenient and straightforward, with lab visits averaging only 15 minutes.
Once your results are in, you will receive a comprehensive summary written by Function's Clinical Team. Clinicians call you promptly if any urgent results arise.
After seeing your biomarkers and Function's insightful recommendations, you will have the confidence to take action and retest in the future to track your progress.
